Upon first entering this quadrant style mid-century modern house and meeting the clients who live there, we were immediately certain of two things. First, the unique home presented a strong architectural sense that demanded to be honored. Additionally, the clients were ultra prepared with a crystal clear vision for their new kitchen, both aesthetically and functionally. The feel of the space would need to be modern and airy with warm earthy elements, specifically dark green painted slab front cabinets with natural wood accents, light durable counter tops, dramatic marble backsplashes, and brass metals. The new, high-functioning kitchen would need to be more open, have more storage and counter space, be well-planned in terms of flow and tout exceptional organization. A beverage bar was also desired.
The existing kitchen was broken up by straight and angled walls. A diagonal peninsula ate up too much space while truncating the work zones. A table area was no longer important. The dishwasher and ovens blocked flow when opened, creating hazards to those walking through. A single standard fridge did not meet their needs. The cooking surface and ovens were scrunched. Cabinets did not extend to the ceiling, wasting space. Lighting was inadequate, storage was scarce.
Important to the architecture of the home, locations and configurations of windows and doors were repeated across all quadrants, so they stayed intact. Removing all of the walls inside of the kitchen space created a wonderful blank canvas for designing.
Eliminating the angled peninsula and table area made room for a luxurious cooking run featuring a six burner cooktop with drawers below, flanked by ovens. A lovely plaster hood with a brass pot rail mounted on the stunning marble backsplash compliment each other. Shelves on either side of the hood are topped with clay sconces. This combination serves as the focal point of the room.
The island further supports prepping and cooking with additional multi-temperature refrigeration, storage and trash pull out. It also serves as a buffet when entertaining. Elegant clay pendants over it speak to the sconces. The peninsula offers conversational seating, prep sink, dishwasher, and more storage. Wall space with a library sconce provides the opportunity for the clients to express their personal style through art. Space behind the peninsula is the chosen spot for a large pantry wall. Talk about the perfect cooking and entertaining zone!
A second L-shape work zone under the large window serves as the area for the main sink, another pull out trash, a second dishwasher, microwave drawer, fridge/freezer, wine column and more storage. A shallow marble shelf intersects the backsplash under beautiful glass door cabinets while another marble shelf extends to the right of the window.
The beverage bar, conveniently located near the seating area with access to the center gathering area of the home, features open shelving for easy access to mugs and glasses. Plenty of counter space for the coffee maker and other beverage related tasks makes this a favorite spot. A textured tile backsplash, quartz countertop and brass hardware add pretty details.
Stunning marble runs through the backsplashes, adding natural drama to the kitchen while quartz tops promise durability. Dark green and light rift cut oak cabinetry work beautifully with the light rustic wood floors and brass faucets and hardware. The new, extremely hard working and naturally good looking kitchen feels right at home in its modern architecture!
