Elevated and timeless, informal and comfortable were words this couple used to describe their vision for their new kitchen. They leaned mid century modern in style but also wanted to honor the traditional home that would be theirs for a long time. Cooking healthy meals was an integral part of their lifestyle. Natural materials, such as plaster for the hood and stone for the countertops and backsplash, appealed to them. The existing kitchen was dated, too small and lacked light. Being coffee connoisseurs, they desired a designated beverage area. A built-in butcher block and large sink with a drainboard accessory were on the wish list as well.
They were willing to modify windows, walls, doors and soffits to get a cohesive plan with great flow and better light. And modify, we did! Down came the wall that separated the kitchen and unwanted formal dining room. This opened the space for a huge island with conversational seating and copious counter space. The flow of the home was greatly improved as now the hub of the home, the kitchen, was open to the newly created dining area/lounge, previously rarely used. We integrated an undercounter beverage refrigerator near the new dining area/lounge to create a beverage bar. A pretty pantry was added on that end as the focal point from the front entrance to the home. The eat-in area of the old kitchen became a nook with comfy seating for relaxing and sipping. The nook window was swapped for a glass door to allow for easy access to the outdoor entertaining area. A lovely hutch in a contrasting finish serves to house the dishes, serving pieces and other accouterments. A small double window over the sink was upgraded to a much larger triple window bringing in the view of the lush backyard. A four-foot workstation, great for prep and clean up, replaced the small sink. A slew of luxury appliances, including a steam oven, set the stage for enjoyable cooking. A beautiful hood was hand plastered and perched over a dramatic marble backsplash. The same show-stopping marble was used for all of the countertops. Absolutely no wish list item was left unfulfilled in this Buckingham Beauty!
