The original kitchen in this 1946 home had seen better days and its new owners had unique ideas for a sensational makeover. Typical words to describe older kitchens were fitting here – small, dark and very dated. This young professional couple craved character and functionality for their new kitchen. They had a vision of a large gathering space where they could cook together and make memories with family and friends. They were open to reconfiguring most of the first floor, including repurposing a guest bedroom as part of the new kitchen. New windows and doors to add light and to bring the outdoors in were desired, which would mean modifications to the brick exterior. Plumbing in the ceiling would need to be reworked in order for ceiling heights to become consistent throughout. Old mechanicals required a lot of attention. The clients were ready for big changes and feared no construction challenges. With clear direction and few constraints, a superb layout emerged! Then came the really exciting part of incorporating details and finishes that would reflect the fun, lighthearted personalities of the homeowners. A playful yet sophisticated palette was curated, consisting of warm wood stains, mixed metals in the form of lighting, hardware and mesh inserts along with other natural elements such as the plaster hood, soapstone bar top and live edge floating shelves. Artsy touches added by our clients encourage everyone who enters to enjoy their surroundings.
