Often, redesigning the kitchen while keeping it in its existing location accomplishes everything on the wish list. Sometimes, however, things need to be shaken up a bit. And shaking up is exactly what we did in this extensive remodel! This sporty young family was ready for some seriously impactful improvements to their home and therefore their lives. The existing kitchen was drab and boring; the complete opposite of the personality of these bright and fun-loving folks. The fridge floated across the room far from the work area with no landing space nearby. Storage space was insufficient. The laundry room was tight and lacked functionality. Adding a mudroom with a message center for staying on top of everything in their active lifestyle was high on the list of priorities.
Early in the design process, it became clear that moving the kitchen to the underutilized existing dining room would yield promising results. The tall windows would need to be modified to accommodate cabinetry. The clients were clear in wanting one main sink in front of the large window and no cooking surface on the island. The cooktop, oven and custom hood would land on the longer wall. Employing an all refrigerator column gave more storage for fresh foods. A separate set of freezer drawers found its spot on the island. Plenty of in-cabinet accessories such as a spice pullout, tray dividers and a lemans corner solution set up this kitchen for efficient use.
Removing half walls would open all the living spaces to each other. A cozy banquette with additional pantry space would claim the original kitchen area, adding a multi-tasking nook for homework and family dinners along with much needed, handy storage. A playful chevron barn door separates the dining from the new mudroom, powder room and laundry room. The space for the mudroom was gained by removing a large closet. This allowed for a large bench and locker type storage for each family member. The laundry room was enlarged and another closet was removed. The newfound space was used for the addition of functional pull outs and shelves for laundry baskets. A glass door was installed to bring in light and a view to the back yard. Space across from the garage entrance revealed itself as the perfect spot for the message center. The large amount of increased organization and functionality truly makes life more enjoyable for every member of the family.
Finishes with flair really pulled these spaces together. The clients knew from the start that they craved sleek cabinetry in a dark painted finish for the kitchen. Grey stained walnut accents for the contrasting hood and island work beautifully with the dark blue-gray cabinetry while complimenting the floor. Calacatta Gold quartz tops and backsplashes brighten the space. Fabulous brass lighting and hardware are the touches that give this kitchen and adjoining eating area personality plus. The kitchen finishes set the tone for the mudroom, powder room and laundry room which speak for themselves. A charismatic remodel for a charismatic family, for sure!
